| 4 | Intravenous vitamin C as adjunctive therapy for enterovirus/rhinovirus induced acute respiratory distress syndrome显示文摘We report a case of virus-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome(ARDS) treated with parenteral vitamin C in a patient testing positive for enterovirus/rhinovirus on viral screening. This report outlines the first use of high dose intravenous vitamin C as an interventional therapy for ARDS, resulting from enterovirus/rhinovirus respiratory infection. From very significant preclinical research performed at Virginia Commonwealth Universitywith vitamin C and with the very positive results of a previously performed phase Ⅰ safety trial infusing high dose vitamin C intravenously into patients with severe sepsis, we reasoned that infusing identical dosing to a patient with ARDS from viral infection would be therapeutic. We report here the case of a 20-year-old, previously healthy, female who contracted respiratory enterovirus/rhinovirus infection that led to acute lung injury and rapidly to ARDS. She contracted the infection in central Italy while on an 8-d spring break from college. During a return flight to the United States, she developed increasing dyspnea and hypoxemia that rapidly developed into acute lung injury that led to ARDS. When support with mechanical ventilation failed, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation(ECMO) was initiated. Twelve hours following ECMO initiation, high dose intravenous vitamin C was begun. The patient's recovery was rapid. ECMO and mechanical ventilation were discontinued by day-7 and the patient recovered with no long-term ARDS sequelae. Infusing high dose intravenous vitamin C into this patient with virus-induced ARDS was associated with rapid resolution of lung injury with no evidence of post-ARDS fibroproliferative sequelae. | 5 | Isolation, identification, Pb(Ⅱ) biosorption isotherms and kinetics of a lead adsorbing Penicillium sp. MRF-1 from South Korean mine soil显示文摘A heavy metal contaminated soil sample collected from a mine in Chonnam Province of South Korea was found to be a source of heavy metal adsorbing biosorbents.Chemical analyses showed high contents of lead(Pb) at 357 mg/kg and cyanide(CN) at 14.6 mg/kg in the soil.The experimental results showed that Penicillium sp.MRF-1 was the best lead resistant fungus among the four individual metal tolerant fungal species isolated from the soil.Molecular characterization of Penicillium sp.MRF-1 was determined using ITS regions sequences.Effects of pH,temperature and contact time on adsorption of Pb(II) by Penicillium sp.MRF-1 were studied.Favorable conditions for maximum biosportion were found at pH 4 with 3 hr contact time.Biosorption of Pb(II) gradually increased with increasing temperature.Efficient performance of the biosorbent was described using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms.Adsorption kinetics was studied using pseudo first-order and pseudo second-order models.Biosorbent Penicillium sp.MRF-1 showed the maximum desorption in alkali conditions.Consistent adsorption/desorption potential of the biosorbent in repetitive cycles validated the efficacy of it in large scale.SEM studies given notes on surface modification of fungal biomass under metal stress and FT-IR results showed the presence of amino groups in the surface structure of the biosorbent.In conclusion,the new biosorbent Penicillium sp.MRF-1 may potentially be used as an inexpensive,easily cultivatable material for the removal of lead from aqueous solution. | Natarajan Velmurugan Grim Hwang Muthuswamy Sathishkumar Tae Kie Choi Kui-Jae Lee Byung-Taek Oh Yang-Soo Lee | 2010 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2010,22,7: | 7 |

| 8 | Anti-inflammatory activity of Alpinia officinarum hance on rat colon inflammation and tissue damage in DSS induced acute and chronic colitis models显示文摘The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible prophylactic effects of Alpinia officinarum hance on experimentally induced acute and chronic colitis models,in-vivo and in-vitro.Acute and chronic colitis were induced in Male Wistar rats by administration of Dextran Sulfate Sodium(DSS)in drinking water.DSS induction exhibited colon shrinkage,increased the Disease Activity Index(DAI)score,increased the levels of inflammatory markers and caused severe anemia.DSS induced animals,co-treated with the hexane extract of Alpinia officinarum(HEAO)(200 mg/kg body wt),effectively suppressed colonic injury that was evidenced by the reduced DAI score,colon weight/length ratio,histological damage,proinflammatory markers and MPO activity.Further,it restored the colonic antioxidants near to normal levels by regulating the oxidative stress via attenuation of lipid peroxidation.Our results revealed that the degree of colitis caused by the administration of DSS was significantly attenuated by HEAO.In addition,the in-vitro study showed that HEAO treatment inhibited the proliferation of HT-29 cells and down regulated the mRNA expression of NF-B and COX-2.Taken together,these results suggest that HEAO is a promising anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory agent that support its possible therapeutic role in the treatment of colitis. | Vijayabharathi Rajendiran Vidhya Natarajan Sivasithamparam Niranjali Devaraj | 2018 | Food Science and Human Wellness2018,7,4: | 5 |
| 9 | In vitro biofilm formation by uropathogenic Escherichia coli and their antimicrobial susceptibility pattern显示文摘Objective:To detect in vitro biofilm formation of uropathogenic Escherichia coli(E.coli)(UPEC) strains isolated from urine specimens and also to determine their antimicrobial susceptibility pattern using 13 commonly used antibiotics.Methods:The present study comprised of 166 urine specimens collected from tertiary care hospitals in and around Coimbatore.South India. All the specimens were subjected to gram staining,bacterial culture and the E.coli strains were screened for biofilm formation using Tube Method(TM),Congo Red Agar(CRA) and Tissue Culture Plate method(TCP) respectively.Subsequently,the antimicrobial susceptibility test was performed by Kirby Bauer-disk diffusion method for the biofilm and non-biofilm producing E. coli strains.Results:Of the 100(60.2%) E.coli strains,72 strains displayed a biofilm positive phenotype under the optimized conditions in the Tube Method and the strains were classified as highly positive(17,23.6%),moderate positive(19.26.3%) and weakly positive(36.50.0%). similarly under the optimized conditions on Congo Red agar medium,biofilm positive phenotype strains were classified as highly positive(23,23%).moderate positive(37.37%) and weakly positive(40,40%).While in TCP method,the biofilm positive phenotype strains were also classified as highly positive(6.6%),moderate positive(80.80%) and weakly positive(14,14%),it didn’t not correlate well with the tube method for detecting biofilm formation in E.coli.The rates of antibiotic resistance of biofilm producing E.coli were found to be 100%for chloramphenicol and amoxyclav(amoxicillin and clavulanic acid),86%for gentamicin and cefotaxime.84%for ceftazidime,83%for cotrimoxazole and piperacillin/tazobactam,75%for tetracycline and 70% for amikacin,Conclusions:This study reveals the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of biofilm and non-biofilm producing uropathogenic E.coli strains. | Poovendran Ponnusamy Vidhya Natarajan Murugan Sevanan | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2012,5,3: | 5 |
| 10 | 纳米钯催化苄基氯代物与烯丙基硼酸频哪醇酯的羧化Suzuki偶联反应(英文)显示文摘CO_2是廉价的Cl源,同时具有无毒、储量丰富的优点,符合绿色化学发展要求.利用CO_2构筑新的C-C键是化学固定CO_2的重要方法.β,γ-不饱和酯类结构单元是许多生物活性分子的重要组成部分,经由双π-烯丙基钯中间体与CO_2反应,合成新的β,γ-不饱和酯类化合物,具有重要意义.CO_2与有机硼化合物的羧化反应己有报道,有机硼化合物具有低毒、对水不敏感等优点.但是己报道的羧化Suzuki偶联反应存在诸多缺点:(1)需要使用含膦或者氮杂环卡宾配体的催化剂,而这些催化剂的制备过程使前期实验步骤变得冗长,同时反应液的酸化后处理过程也会造成环境污染;(2)有机硼试剂的官能团兼容范围窄,限制了底物范围的拓展.本课题组以原位生成的纳米钯粒子为催化剂,在CO_2存在的温和条件下,高效实现了苄氯与烯丙基硼酸频哪醇酯的羧化Suzuki偶联反应.反应过程中无其它配体加入,反应结束后不需要酸化或酯化的后处理过程.该反应将具有广泛的官能团兼容性.本文以TBAB稳定的纳米钯粒子为催化剂,在温和条件下,实现了氯甲基芳香化合物、烯丙基硼酸频哪醇酯和CO_2的三组分羧化Suzuki偶联反应.最佳反应条件为:Pd(acac)_2(5mol%)、TBAB(0.7mmol,1.4 equiv.)、KF(1mmol,2.0 equiv.)、苄基卤代物(0.5 mmol)、烯丙基硼酸频哪醇酯(0.6 mmol,1.2 equiv.)、CO_2(2.0 MPa)、溶剂THF(5 mL),50℃反应24h.在最佳反应条件下,苯环、萘环以及杂芳环的氯甲基化合物均可发生该羧化反应.苯环上取代基的位置对产物的收率有影响.当使用1-溴甲基萘作为底物时反应也能够发生,收率与1-氯甲基萘作为底物时的收率相当.与已报道有机硼试剂的羧化反应相比,该反应体系无需加入配体,原位生成了纳米钯粒子,避免了催化剂或者配体的复杂制备过程.该反应中,氟离子的存在是必要的,对烯丙基硼酸频哪醇酯具有活化作用. | 孙健 王加升 冯秀娟 Yoshinori Yamamoto Abdulrahman I.Almansour Natarajan Arumugam Raju Suresh Kumar 包明 | 2018 | Chinese Journal of Catalysis2018,39,7: | 4 |

| 20 | An innovative approach to minimize excess sludge production in sewage treatment using integrated bioreactors显示文摘The present investigation deals with an application of integrated sequential oxic and anoxic bioreactor(SOABR) and fluidized immobilized cell carbon oxidation(FICCO) reactor for the treatment of domestic wastewater with minimum sludge generation. The performance of integrated SOABR-FICCO system was evaluated on treating the domestic wastewater at hydraulic retention time(HRT) of 3 hr and 6 hr for 120 days at organic loading rate(OLR)of 191 ± 31 mg/(L·hr). The influent wastewater was characterized by chemical oxygen demand(COD) 573 ± 93 mg/L; biochemical oxygen demand(BOD5) 197 ± 35 mg/L and total suspended solids(TSS) 450 ± 136 mg/L. The integrated SOABR-FICCO reactors have established a significant removal of COD by 94% ± 1%, BOD5 by 95% ± 0.6% and TSS by 95% ± 4% with treated domestic wastewater characteristics COD 33 ± 5 mg/L; BOD59 ± 0.8 mg/L and TSS 17 ± 9 mg/L under continuous mode of operation for 120 days. The mass of dry sludge generated from SOABR-FICCO system was 22.9 g/m^3. The sludge volume index of sludge formed in the SOABR reactor was 32 mL/g and in FICCO reactor it was 46 mL/g. The sludge formed in SOABR and FICCO reactor was characterized by TGA, DSC and SEM analysis.
