| 1 | Alcoholic liver disease:Utility of animal models显示文摘Alcoholic liver disease(ALD) is a major cause of acute and chronic liver injury. Extensive evidence has been accumulated on the pathological process of ALD during the past decades. However, effective treatment options for ALD are very limited due to the lack of suitable in vivo models that recapitulate the full spectrum of ALD. Experimental animal models of ALD, particularly rodents, have been used extensively to mimic human ALD. An ideal animal model should recapitulate all aspects of the ALD process, including significant steatosis, hepatic neutrophil infiltration, and liver injury. A better strategy against ALD depends on clear diagnostic biomarkers, accurate predictor(s) of its progression and new therapeutic approaches to modulate stop or even reverse the disease. Numerous models employing rodent animals have been established in the last decades to investigate the effects of acute and chronic alcohol exposure on the initiation and progression of ALD. Although significant progress has been made in gaining better knowledge on the mechanisms and pathology of ALD, many features of ALD are unknown, and require further investigation, ideally with improved animal models that more effectively mimic human ALD. | 2 | Epidemiological Evolution of Lung Cancer in the South of Spain from 1990 to 2010显示文摘Background: Changes in lung cancer has been characterized by the increase of cases among women and the increase in adenocarcinomas among other histological subtypes.Methods: Descriptive analysis of cases diagnosed with lung cancer in Hospital Virgen de las Nieves(Spain) from 1990 to 2010,based on five variables(age, sex, smoking, histology and pathological anatomy). The study establishes associations between these variables and compares the results with the literature.Results: 2,026 patients were diagnosed with lung cancer in this period; 1,838 were males(90.7%) and 188 women(9.3%); 1,892 patients(93.4%) were smokers or ex-smokers and 134(6.6%) had never smoked; the most frequent non-small cell histology types were squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma and it was the most frequent neoplasia in women and were associated with a lower tobacco consumption.Conclusion: The large majority of lung cancer cases is associated with a history of smoking tobacco and there are histopathological differences according to gender and cumulative tobacco smoke load. | Alberto Caballero Vázquez Ana Dolores Romero Ortiz Jose Manuel González de Vega San Román Raimundo García del Moral Bernardino Alcázar Navarrete | 2018 | 中国肺癌杂志2018,21,1: | 17 |

| 4 | Use of a combination strategy to improve neuroprotection and neuroregeneration in a rat model of acute spinal cord injury显示文摘Spinal cord injury is a very common pathological event that has devastating functional consequences in patients. In recent years, several research groups are trying to find an effective therapy that could be applied in clinical practice. In this study, we analyzed the combination of different strategies as a potential therapy for spinal cord injury. Immunization with neural derived peptides(INDP), inhibition of glial scar formation(dipyridyl: DPY), as well as the use of biocompatible matrix(fibrin glue: FG) impregnated with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs) were combined and then its beneficial effects were evaluated in the induction of neuroprotection and neuroregeneration after acute SCI. Sprague-Dawley female rats were subjected to a moderate spinal cord injury and then randomly allocated into five groups: 1) phosphate buffered saline; 2) DPY; 3) INDP + DPY; 4) DPY+ FG; 5) INDP + DPY + FG + MSCs. In all rats, intervention was performed 72 hours after spinal cord injury. Locomotor and sensibility recovery was assessed in all rats. At 60 days after treatment, histological examinations of the spinal cord(hematoxylin-eosin and Bielschowsky staining) were performed. Our results showed that the combination therapy(DPY+ INDP + FG+ MSCs) was the best strategy to promote motor and sensibility recovery. In addition, significant increases in tissue preservation and axonal density were observed in the combination therapy group. Findings from this study suggest that the combination theapy(DPY+ INDP + FG + MSCs) exhibits potential effects on the protection and regeneration of neural tissue after acute spinal cord injury. | 5 | T_3-induced liver AMP-activated protein kinase signaling:Redox dependency and upregulation of downstream targets显示文摘AIM:To investigate the redox dependency and promotion of downstream targets in thyroid hormone(T3)-induced AMP-activated protein kinase(AMPK)signaling as cellular energy sensor to limit metabolic stresses in the liver.METHODS:Fed male Sprague-Dawley rats were given a single ip dose of 0.1 mg T3/kg or T3 vehicle(Na OH0.1 N;controls)and studied at 8 or 24 h after treatment.Separate groups of animals received 500 mg N-acetylcysteine(NAC)/kg or saline ip 30 min prior T3.Measurements included plasma and liver 8-isoprostane and serumβ-hydroxybutyrate levels(ELISA),hepaticlevels of m RNAs(q PCR),proteins(Western blot),and phosphorylated AMPK(ELISA).RESULTS:T3 upregulates AMPK signaling,including the upstream kinases Ca2+-calmodulin-dependent protein kinase kinase-βand transforming growth factor-β-activated kinase-1,with T3-induced reactive oxygen species having a causal role due to its suppression by pretreatment with the antioxidant NAC.Accordingly,AMPK targets acetyl-Co A carboxylase and cyclic AMP response element binding protein are phosphorylated,with the concomitant carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1α(CPT-1α)activation and higher expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γco-activator-1αand that of the fatty acid oxidation(FAO)-related enzymes CPT-1α,acyl-Co A oxidase 1,and acylCo A thioesterase 2.Under these conditions,T3 induced a significant increase in the serum levels ofβ-hydroxybutyrate,a surrogate marker for hepatic FAO.CONCLUSION:T3 administration activates liver AMPK signaling in a redox-dependent manner,leading to FAO enhancement as evidenced by the consequent ketogenic response,which may constitute a key molecular mechanism regulating energy dynamics to support T3preconditioning against ischemia-reperfusion injury. | Luis A Videla Virginia Fernández Pamela Cornejo Romina Vargas Paula Morales Juan Ceballo Alvaro Fischer Nicolás Escudero Oscar Escobar | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,46: | 3 |
