| 2 | Synthesis of an AIE-active fluorogen and its application in cell imaging显示文摘A fluorogen named 1-decyl-1-methyl-2,5-bis{4-[(N,N-diethylamino)methyl]phenyl}-3,4-diphenylsilole (3) was synthesized. It emitted weakly as isolated molecule but strongly as supramolecular aggregate, showing a characteristic behavior of aggregation-induced emission (AIE). The molecules of 3 formed highly emissive nanoparticles in aqueous media, which quickly and selectively marked cytoplasm of HeLa cells and posed no toxicity to the living cells. | 3 | A cross-sectional study on compliance with topical glaucoma medication and its associated socioeconomic burden for a Chinese population显示文摘AIM: To estimate the overall drug compliance for local Chinese glaucoma patients on long-term topical treatment.METHODS: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study.Fifty-seven primary glaucoma patients from the subspecialty clinic of a publicly-funded tertiary care hospital in Hong Kong completed a questionnaire on compliance with topical glaucoma medication,attitude towards glaucoma and therapy and vision related quality of life.Noncompliance was defined as reporting missing more than or equal to 10% of the prescribed topical glaucoma medication during the 2wk immediately prior to the consultation.Relationships between noncompliance and demographics,attitude,disease and treatment status was studied.Cost was estimated with quality of life and direct medical cost involved with noncompliance.Multivariable logistic regression on noncompliance was performed on selected factors.RESULTS: Compliance was calculated as 75%(95% CI: 64%-87%) among 57 subjects(mean age 69 y,female 51%).No statistical significant relationship was established between noncompliance and any single factors or outcomes.Age(P=0.048) and forgetfulness(P=0.064) were found to be marginally significant predictive factors on noncompliance in multivariable logistic regression.Noncompliance might be related(P=0.130) to poorer self-rated vision-associated quality of life.The societal cost of noncompliance was estimated to be over 2510 life-years and US$ 3.7 million territory-wide.CONCLUSION: The compliance of Chinese glaucoma patients in Hong Kong is comparable to other parts in the world,and carries detrimental impacts on individual and societal levels.Age and forgetfulness are two possible independent predictors for noncompliance. | Man-Hin Lui Jason Chun Ho Lam Yi Lee Kwong Tak Siu Wong Pak Long Cheung Sherri Shun Yan Lai Pak Lun Yuen Wai Yiu Lam Ho Yan Chan Yiu Fai Wong Jimmy Shiu Ming Lai Kendrick Co Shih | 2017 | International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2017，10，2： | 5 |
| 4 | Profiles and removal efficiency of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by two different types of sewage treatment plants in Hong Kong显示文摘Sewage discharge could be a major source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) in the coastal waters. Stonecutters Island and Shatin Sewage Treatment Works(SCISTW and STSTW)in Hong Kong, adopted chemically enhanced primary treatment and biological treatment,respectively. This study aimed at(1) determining the removal efficiencies of PAHs,(2) comparing the capabilities in removing PAHs, and(3) characterizing the profile of each individual PAHs, in the two sewage treatment plants(STPs). Quantification of 16 PAHs was conducted by a Gas Chromatography. The concentrations of total PAHs decreased gradually along the treatment processes(from 301 ± 255 and 307 ± 217 ng/L to 14.9 ± 12.1 and 63.3 ± 54.1 ng/L in STSTW and SCISTW, respectively). It was noted that STSTW was more capable in removing total PAHs than SCISTW with average total removal efficiency 94.4% ± 4.12% vs. 79.2% ± 7.48%(p < 0.05). | 5 | Cell cycle-related kinase reprograms the liver immune microenvironment to promote cancer metastasis显示文摘The liver is an immunologically tolerant organ and a common metastatic site of multiple cancer types.Although a role for cancer cell invasion programs has been well characterized,whether and how liver-intrinsic factors drive metastatic spread is incompletely understood.Here,we show that aberrantly activated hepatocyte-intrinsic cell cycle-related kinase(CCRK)signaling in chronic liver diseases is critical for cancer metastasis by reprogramming an immunosuppressive microenvironment.Using an inducible liverspecific transgenic model,we found that CCRK overexpression dramatically increased both B16F10 melanoma and MC38 colorectal cancer(CRC)metastasis to the liver,which was highly infiltrated by polymorphonuclear-myeloid-derived suppressor cells(PMNMDSCs)and lacking natural killer T(NKT)cells.Depletion of PMN-MDSCs in CCRK transgenic mice restored NKT cell levels and their interferon gamma production and reduced liver metastasis to 2.7% and 0.7%(metastatic tumor weights)in the melanoma and CRC models,respectively.Mechanistically,CCRK activated nuclear factor-kappa B(NF-κB)signaling to increase the PMN-MDSC trafficking chemokine C-X-C motif ligand 1(CXCL1),which was positively correlated with liver-infiltrating PMN-MDSC levels in CCRK transgenic mice.Accordingly,CRC liver metastasis patients exhibited hyperaaivation of hepatic CCRK/NF-κB/CXCL1 signaling,which was associated with accumulation of PMN-MDSCs and paucity of NKT cells compared to healthy liver transplantation donors.In summary,this study demonstrates that immunosuppressive reprogramming by hepatic CCRK signaling undermines antimetastatic immunosurveillance.Our findings offer new mechanistic insights and therapeutic targets for liver metastasis intervention. | Xuezhen Zeng Jingying Zhou Zhewen Xiong Hanyong Sun Weiqin Yang Myth T.S.Mok Jing Wang Jingqing Li Man Liu Wenshu Tang Yu Feng Hector Kwong-Sang W ang Shun-Wa Tsang King-Lau Chow Philip Chun Yeung John Wong Paul Bo-San Lai Anthony Wing-Hung Chan Ka Fai To Stephen Lam Chan Qiang Xia Jing Xue Xiao Chen Jun Yu Sui Peng Joseph Jao-Yiu Sung Ming Kuang Alfred Sze-Lok Cheng | 2021 | Cellular & Molecular Immunology2021，18，4： | 5 |

A case of inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver found in association with a malignant gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) of the small bowel was reported. The inflammatory pseudotumor was misdiagnosed as a metastasis from the GIST by frozen section. A correct diagnosis was made only after histopathological examination of the paraffin section of the resescted specimen. This case is psrticularly interesting because of the association of the two rare pathological entities and the diagnostic dilemma that arose from the similarity of their histological appearances.
