| 1 | New advances in hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is the leading cause of deaths in cirrhotic patients and the third cause of cancer related deaths.Most HCC are associated withwell known underlying risk factors,in fact,HCC arise in cirrhotic patients in up to 90%of cases,mainly due to chronic viral hepatitis and alcohol abuse.The worldwide prevention strategies are conducted to avoid the infection of new subjects and to minimize the risk of liver disease progression in infected patients.HCC is a condition which lends itself to surveillance as at-risk individuals can readily be identified.The American and European guidelines recommended implementation of surveillance programs with ultrasound every six months in patient atrisk for developing HCC.The diagnosis of HCC can be based on non-invasive criteria(only in cirrhotic patient)or pathology.Accurately staging patients is essential to oncology practice.The ideal tumour staging system in HCC needs to account for both tumour characteristics and liver function.Treatment allocation is based on several factors:Liver function,size and number of tumours,macrovascular invasion or extrahepatic spread.The recommendations in terms of selection for different treatment strategies must be based on evidence-based data.Resection,liver transplant and interventional radiology treatment are mainstays of HCC therapy and achieve the best outcomes in well-selected candidates.Chemoembolization is the most widely used treatment for unresectable HCC or progression after curative treatment.Finally,in patients with advanced HCC with preserved liver function,sorafenib is the only approved systemic drug that has demonstrated a survival benefit and is the standard of care in this group of patients. | Sonia Pascual Iván Herrera Javier Irurzun | 2016 | World Journal of Hepatology2016,8,9: | 51 |

| 3 | Human Interaction Dynamics for Its Use in Mobile Robotics:Impedance Control for Leader-follower Formation显示文摘A complete characterization of the behavior in human-robot interactions(HRI) includes both: the behavioral dynamics and the control laws that characterize how the behavior is regulated with the perception data. In this way, this work proposes a leader-follower coordinate control based on an impedance control that allows to establish a dynamic relation between social forces and motion error. For this, a scheme is presented to identify the impedance based on fictitious social forces, which are described by distance-based potential fields.As part of the validation procedure, we present an experimental comparison to select the better of two different fictitious force structures. | 4 | Applications of finite element simulation in orthopedic and trauma surgery显示文摘Research in different areas of orthopedic and trauma surgery requires a methodology that allows both a more economic approach and the ability to reproduce different situations in an easy way. Simulation models have been introduced recently in bioengineering and could become an essential tool in the study of any physiological unity, regardless of its complexity. The main problem in modeling with finite elements simulation is to achieve an accurate reproduction of the anatomy and a perfect correlation of the different structures, in any region of the human body. Authors have developed a mixed technique, joining the use of a three-dimensional laser scanner Roland Picza captured together with computed tomography(CT) and 3D CT images, to achieve a perfect reproduction of the anatomy. Finite element(FE) simulation lets us know the biomechanical changes that take place after hipprostheses or osteosynthesis implantation and biological responses of bone to biomechanical changes. The simulation models are able to predict changes in bone stress distribution around the implant, so allowing preventing future pathologies. The development of a FE model of lumbar spine is another interesting application of the simulation. The model allows research on the lumbar spine, not only in physiological conditions but also simulating different load conditions, to assess the impact on biomechanics. Different degrees of disc degeneration can also be simulated to determine the impact on adjacent anatomical elements. Finally, FE models may be useful to test different fixation systems, i.e., pedicular screws, interbody devices or rigid fixations compared with the dynamic ones. We have also developed models of lumbar spine and hip joint to predict the occurrence of osteoporotic fractures, based on densitometric determinations and specific biomechanical models, including approaches from damage and fracture mechanics. Its high prevalence, potentially severe consequences and associated costs make the study of this phenomenon a priority issue. In this article, basic non-adherence concepts of prevalence, consequences, evaluation methods, methodological restrictions of available studies, risk factors and intervention strategies, are reviewed. Studying non-adherence risk factors is a necessary step toward designing adequately oriented intervention strategies. An operative definition of adherence and good knowledge of its evaluation methods are essential to study this phenomenon. Unfortunately, most available studies contain methodological restrictions, especially concerning the evaluation methods, and an agreed operative definition of adherence has only very recently been reached. | 8 | Biofilm and Helicobacter pylori:From environment to human host显示文摘Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori)is a Gram negative pathogen that selectively colonizes the human gastric epithelium.Over 50%of the world population is infected with H.pylori reaching up to 90%of infected individuals in developing countries.Nonetheless the increased impact upon public health care,its reservoir and the transmission pathway of the species has not been clearly established yet.Molecular studies allowed the detection of H.pylori in various aquatic environments,even forming biofilm in tap water distribution systems in several countries,suggesting a role of water as a possible reservoir of the pathogen.The persistence of human infection with H.pylori and the resistance of clinical isolates to commonly used antibiotics in eradication therapy have been related to the genetic variability of the species and its ability to develop biofilm,demonstrated both in vivo and in vitro experiments.Thus,during the last years,experimental work with this pathogen has been focused in the search for biofilm inhibitors and biofilm destabilizing agents.However,only two anti-H.pylori biofilm disrupting agents have been successfully used:Curcumin-a natural dye-and N-acetyl cysteine-a mucolytic agent used in respiratory diseases.The main goal of this review was to discuss the evidences available in the literature supporting the ability of H.pylori to form biofilm upon various surfaces in aquatic environments,both in vivo and in vitro.The results published and our own observations suggest that the ability of H.pylori to form biofilm may be important for surviving under stress conditions or in the spread of the infection among humans,mainly through natural water sources and water distribution systems. | Apolinaria García María José Salas-Jara Carolina Herrera Carlos González | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,19: | 5 |
| 9 | The transcription factor ZEB1 promotes chemoresistance in prostate cancer cell lines显示文摘One of the factors promoting tumoral progress is the abnormal activation of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT)program which has been associated with chemoresistance in tumoral cells.The transcription factor zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox 1(ZEB1),a key EMT activator,has recently been related to docetaxel resistance,the main chemotherapeutic used in advanced prostate cancer treatment.The mechanisms involved in this protective effect are still unclear.In a previous work,we demonstrated that ZEB1 expression induced an EMT-like phenotype in prostate cancer cell lines.In this work,we used prostate cancer cell lines 22Rvl and DU145 to study the effect of ZEB1 modulation on docetaxel resistance and its possible mechanisms.The results showed that ZEB1 overexpression conferred to 22Rvl cell resistance to docetaxel while its silencing made DU145 cells more sensitive to it.Analysis of resistance markers showed no presenee of ATP-binding cassette subfamily B member 1(MDR1)and no changes in breast cancer resistance protein(BCRP)or ATP-binding cassette subfamily C member 10(MRP7).However,a correlation between ZEB1,multidrug resistance-associated protein 1(MRP1),and ATP-binding cassette subfamily C member 4(MRP4)expression was observed.MRP4 inhibition,using MK571,resensitized cells with ZEB1 overexpression to docetaxel treatment.In addition,modulation of ZEB1 and subsequent change in MRP4 expression correlated with a lower apoptotic response to docetaxel,characterized by lower B-cell lymphoma 2(Bcl2),high BCL2-associated X protein(Bax),and high active caspase 3 expression.The response to docetaxel in our model seems to be mediated mainly by activation of the apoptotic death program.Our results showed that modulation of MRP4 could be a mediator of ZEBl-related resistance to docetaxel in prostate cancer,making it a possible marker for chemotherapy response in patients who do not express MDR1. | Octavio Orellana-Serradell Daniela Herrera Enrique A Castellon Hector R Contreras | 2019 | Asian Journal of Andrology2019,21,5: | 5 |

| 12 | Methylation of DAPK and THBS1 genes in esophageal gastric-type columnar metaplasia显示文摘AIM: To explore methylation of DAPK, THBS1, CDH-1, and p14 genes, and Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) status in individuals harboring esophageal columnar metaplasia.METHODS: Distal esophageal mucosal samples obtained by endoscopy and histologically diagnosed as gastric-type(non-specialized) columnar metaplasia, were studied thoroughly. DNA was extracted from paraffin blocks, and methylation status of deathassociated protein kinase(DAPK), thrombospondin-1(THBS1), cadherin-1(CDH1), and p14 genes, was examined using a methyl-sensitive polymerase chain reaction(MS-PCR) and sodium bisulfite modification protocol. H. pylori cag A status was determined by PCR.RESULTS: In total, 68 subjects(33 females and 35 males), with a mean age of 52 years, were included. H. pylori cag A positive was present in the esophageal gastric-type metaplastic mucosa of 18 individuals. DAPK, THSB1, CDH1, and p14 gene promoters were methylated by MS-PCR in 40(58.8%), 33(48.5%), 46(67.6%), and 23(33.8%) cases of the 68 esophageal samples. | 13 | Wavelet-based deconvolution of ultrasonic signals in nondestructive evaluation显示文摘In this paper, the inverse problem of reconstructing reflectivity function of a medium is examined within a blind deconvolution framework. The ultrasound pulse is estimated using higher-order statistics, and Wiener filter is used to obtain the ultrasonic reflectivity function through wavelet-based models. A new approach to the parameter estimation of the inverse filtering step is proposed in the nondestructive evaluation field, which is based on the theory of Fourier-Wavelet regularized deconvolution (ForWaRD). This new approach can be viewed as a solution to the open problem of adaptation of the ForWaRD framework to perform the convolution kernel estimation and deconvolution interdependently. The results indicate stable solutions of the esti- mated pulse and an improvement in the radio-frequency (RF) signal taking into account its signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and axial resolution.
