1Multi-detector computed tomography in the diagnosis and management of acute aortic syndromes显示文摘Acute aortic syndrome(AAS) is a spectrum of conditions, which may ultimately progress to potentially life-threatening aortic rupture. This syndrome encompasses aortic dissection(AD), intramural haematoma, penetrating atherosclerotic ulcer and unstable thoracic aortic aneurysms. Multi-detector CT(MDCT) is crucial for the diagnosis of AAS, especially in the emergency setting due to its speed, accuracy and ready availability. This review attends to the value of appropriate imaging protocols in obtaining good quality images that can permit a confident diagnosis of AAS. AD is the most commonly encountered AAS and also the one with maximum potential to cause catastrophic outcome if not diagnosed and managed promptly. Hence, this review briefly addresses certain relevant clinical perspectives on this condition. Differentiating the false from the true lumen in AD is often essential; a spectrum of CT findings, e.g., 'beak sign', aortic 'cobwebs' that allows such differentiation have been described with explicit illustrations. The value of non enhanced CT scans, especially useful in the diagnosis of an intramural hematoma has also been illustrated. Overlap in the clinical and imaging features of the various conditions presenting as AAS is not unusual. However, on most instances MDCT enables the rightdiagnosis. 2Mitochondria-targeted agents: Future perspectives of mitochondrial pharmaceutics in cardiovascular diseases显示文摘Mitochondria are one of the major sites for the genera-tion of reactive oxygen species(ROS) as an undesirable side product of oxidative energy metabolism. Damaged mitochondria can augment the generation of ROS. Dys-function of mitochondria increase the risk for a large number of human diseases, including cardiovascular diseases(CVDs). Heart failure(HF) following ischemic heart disease, infantile cardiomyopathy and cardiac hypertrophy associated with left ventricular dilations are some of the CVDs in which the role of mitochon-drial oxidative stress has been reported. Advances in mitochondrial research during the last decade focused on the preservation of its function in the myocardium, which is vital for the cellular energy production. Expe-rimental and clinical trials have been conducted using mitochondria-targeted molecules like: MnSOD mimetics, such as EUK-8, EUK-134 and MitoSOD; choline esters of glutathione and N-acetyl-L-cysteine; triphenylphospho-nium ligated vitamin E, lipoic acid, plastoquinone andmitoCoQ10; and Szeto-Schiller(SS)- peptides(SS-02 and SS-31). Although many results are inconclusive, some of the findings, especially on CoQ10, are worthwhile. 4Recent trends in metal ion based hydrogel biomaterials for tissue engineering and other biomedical applications显示文摘Recently,the metal ion cross-linked hydrogels have gained enormous interest because of its excellent properties like self-healing,fast recovery,biocompatibility and high mechanical properties combined with multi-stimuli responsiveness.In this review article,we have summarized the recent trends in the development of metal ion cross-linked hydrogels for tissue engineering and biomedical applications.A number of metal ions and their contribution in the synthesis of various cross-linked hydrogels are discussed with respect to their crosslinking mechanisms,compositions,physio-chemical and biological properties.A special emphasis has been given to ferric(Fe^(3+))ion cross-linked hydrogels and their different combinations owing to their numerous researches reported in the recent past with exceptional properties.The application of these metal ion based hydrogels in biomedical applications including tissue engineering,sensing,wound healing,drug delivery and as tissue adhesive and tissue sealants are reviewed with specific examples.Importantly,the application of these metal ion cross-linked hydrogels as inks in 3 D printing is explained in a separate section.Finally,the possible toxic effects of the different metal ions and their effects have been scrutinized.Future directions and comprehensive applications of the hydrogels are highlighted.Gopinathan Janarthanan Insup Noh 2021Journal of Materials Science & Technology2021,,4:5
5Molt and reproduction enhancement together with hemolymph ecdysteroid elevation under eyestalk ablation in the female fiddler crab,Uca triangularis(Brachyura:Decapoda)显示文摘We present the results of eyestalk extirpation experiments performed on the fiddler crab, Uca triangularis at seasons of molting and reproduction, with a view to have a better understanding of the regulatory mechanisms of these two highly energy-demanding processes. Bilateral eyestalk ablation resulted in precocious acceleration of both molting and reproduction, irrespective of the season at which each experiment was conducted. The rate of accelerated ovarian growth, however, was maximum if the eyestalk ablation was conducted during August–January, the breeding season in the wild, or in February–May(molting-reproductive season), wherein a section of the wild population would be engaged in molting and another section in breeding. The highest degree of precocious molt acceleration, on the other hand, was obtained during June–July when the population was primarily engaged in molting, but with no reproductive activity. The precocious oocyte maturation(due to de-eyestalking) was minimal in June–July. Significantly, the eyestalk ablation also resulted in a dramatic increase in the hemolymph ecdysteroid titer, revealing that a high ecdysteroid titer would have no restraining influence on vitellogenesis. No spawning was, however, observed among de-eyestalked females, even though their final oocyte size surpassed the size of the normal mature oocytes, implying that spawning is not exclusively under the control of eyestalk hormones. A comparative study performed on the vitelline components of the experimentals and the controls revealed that the precociously incorporated yolk under eyestalk ablation was biochemically impoverished. These results indicate that throughout the annual cycle, both the somatic and the reproductive growth of U. triangularis are under the influence of inhibitory principles from the eyestalks. It is also revealing that mere deprival of the inhibitory principles does not culminate into successful vitellogenesis.
