| 2 | Extraction of heavy metals from e-waste contaminated soils using EDDS显示文摘Environmental contamination due to uncontrolled e-waste recycling activities is drawing increasing attention in the world. Extraction of these metals with biodegradable chelant [S,S]-ethylenediaminedisuccinic acid (EDDS) and the factors influencing extraction efficacy were investigated in the present study. Results showed that the addition of EDDS at low pH (5.5) produced higher metal extraction than that at high pH (8.0) solution. Metal speciation analysis indicated that Cu was completely complexed with EDDS at different pH conditions with various amounts of EDDS applied. For Pb and Zn, at low EDDS dose of 0.304 mol/kg soil, they were present as Pb- and Zn-EDDS. However, at high EDDS dose of 1.26 mol/kg soil, most of Pb was bound with dissolved organic matter. | 4 | Deep learning applied to two-dimensional color Doppler flow imaging ultrasound images significantly improves diagnostic performance in the classification of breast masses:a multicenter study显示文摘Background:The current deep learning diagnosis of breast masses is mainly reflected by the diagnosis of benign and malignant lesions.In China,breast masses are divided into four categories according to the treatment method:inflammatory masses,adenosis,benign tumors,and malignant tumors.These categorizations are important for guiding clinical treatment.In this study,we aimed to develop a convolutional neural network(CNN)for classification of these four breast mass types using ultrasound(US)images.Methods:Taking breast biopsy or pathological examinations as the reference standard,CNNs were used to establish models for the four-way classification of 3623 breast cancer patients from 13 centers.The patients were randomly divided into training and test groups(n=1810 vs.n=1813).Separate models were created for two-dimensional(2D)images only,2D and color Doppler flow imaging(2D-CDFI),and 2D-CDFI and pulsed wave Doppler(2D-CDFI-PW)images.The performance of these three models was compared using sensitivity,specificity,area under receiver operating characteristic curve(AUC),positive(PPV)and negative predictive values(NPV),positive(LR+)and negative likelihood ratios(LR-),and the performance of the 2D model was further compared between masses of different sizes with above statistical indicators,between images from different hospitals with AUC,and with the performance of 37 radiologists.Results:The accuracies of the 2D,2D-CDFI,and 2D-CDFI-PW models on the test set were 87.9%,89.2%,and 88.7%,respectively.The AUCs for classification of benign tumors,malignant tumors,inflammatory masses,and adenosis were 0.90,0.91,0.90,and 0.89,respectively(95%confidence intervals[CIs],0.87-0.91,0.89-0.92,0.87-0.91,and 0.86-0.90).The 2D-CDFI model showed better accuracy(89.2%)on the test set than the 2D(87.9%)and 2D-CDFI-PW(88.7%)models.The 2D model showed accuracy of 81.7%on breast masses≤1 cm and 82.3%on breast masses>1 cm;there was a significant difference between the two groups(P<0.001).The accuracy of the CNN classifications for the test set(89.2%)was significantly higher than that of all the radiologists(30%).Conclusions:The CNN may have high accuracy for classification of US images of breast masses and perform significantly better than human radiologists.Trial registration:Chictr.org,ChiCTR1900021375;http://gffzz62a03ee25e6f4a77huuvcpwwbnccf65uq.ffgz.tsg.suse.edu.cn/showproj.aspx?proj=33139. | Teng-Fei Yu Wen He Cong-Gui Gan Ming-Chang Zhao Qiang Zhu Wei Zhang Hui Wang Yu-Kun Luo Fang Nie Li-Jun Yuan Yong Wang Yan-Li Guo Jian-Jun Yuan Li-Tao Ruan Yi-Cheng Wang Rui-Fang Zhang Hong-Xia Zhang Bin Ning Hai-Man Song Shuai Zheng Yi Li Yang Guang | 2021 | Chinese Medical Journal2021,,4: | 11 |
| 5 | Plant food sources and stone tools' function at the site of Shunshanji based on starch grain analysis显示文摘The upper-middle Huai River valley(HRV) is located in the transition zone in the middle of eastern China. Previous studies have shown that the past populations in the upper HRV obtained plant food through gathering and cultivation of both rice and millet during the middle Neolithic. However, for the middle HRV it is not very clear what methods were used by humans to obtain plant food in that time. In this paper, starch grain analysis was carried out on 17 stone tools and 29 cauldron pottery sherds unearthed at Shunshanji(8.5–7.0 kyr BP), which is known as the earliest Neolithic site in the middle HRV excavated so far. Here, ancient starches from Coix lacryma-jobi, Triticeae, Oryza sativa, Trichosanthes kirilowii and one unidentified specie were recovered. This study contributes to the limited knowledge of food strategies as observed in the middle HRV. It demonstrates that both gathering and cultivation of rice took place during the middle-Neolithic. Among the identified species, Coix lacryma-jobi appears to have been the main plant food at Shunshanji. Moreover, it is clear that Oryza sativa was not consumed as much as other plant species according to the occurrence frequency of different starch grains. Starch grains were also found on the used surfaces of grinding stone implements as well as pestles, which means that these stone tools were used for food processing. In addition, axes from Shunshanji may also have been used for food processing as well as wood working because starches were also found on the edge of axes. | 7 | Elevated serum prostaglandin E2 predicts the risk of infection in hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure patients显示文摘Objective: To evaluate the serum Prostaglandin E2(PGE2) level in Acute-on-chronic liver failure(ACLF) and determine its predicative value for infection.Methods: From April 2014 to April 2015, ninety-one patients with hepatitis B virus and ACLF but without infection were enrolled into this prospective study that was carried out at our Hospital. Twenty patients with stable chronic hepatitis B were enrolled from the outpatient department and twenty healthy control subjects without any disease were enrolled from hospital staff. Serum PGE2 levels were determined using ELISA at enrollment. Clinical and laboratory parameters were collected. Receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curves were used to determine optimal cut-off values to predict infection.Results: Significantly higher PGE2 levels were found in patients with ACLF in comparison with healthy controls and patients with stable CHB(P < 0.000 1). In ACLF patients, PGE2 levels were significantly higher in patients that eventually developed infection than those without this complication(P < 0.000 1). ROC analysis showed that serum PGE2(area under the ROC curve, 0.83) could predict infection in patients with ACLF with sensitivity of 78.4% and specificity of 81.5% using a threshold of 141 pg/m L.Conclusions: Serum PGE2 is associated with the susceptibility to secondary infections for patients with ACLF. | 10 | Host compatibility interacts with seed dispersal to determine smallscale distribution of a mistletoe in Xishuangbanna,Southwest China显示文摘Aims Mistletoe infection between intra- and interspecific hosts can be restricted by seed dispersal, host–mistletoe compatibility and other factors, yet few studies have linked seed dispersal and seedling establishment together for understanding mistletoe plant distribution and demography together in different anthropogenic disturbance forest types at a local scale. The objectives of this study were to examine how three factors—seed disperser behavior, post-dispersal host compatibility and canopy cover—affect the spatial distribution of a generalist mistletoe Dendrophthoe pentandra (Loranthaceae) in plantation and rainforest within Xishuangbanna, Southwest China.MethodsWe observed mistletoe D. pentandra infection patterns at the scale of individual trees and sixteen 400-m2 forest plots in adjacent plantation and rainforest within Xishuangbanna. To elucidate what determines infection patterns at different scales and in different forest types, we observed the behavior of major avian seed dispersers and carried out a seed inoculation experiment to examine how post-dispersal compatibility and light incidence affect the infection of different hosts.Important FindingsDendrophthoe pentandra displayed an aggregated distribution and infected 10 species in our study site, with a significantly higher infection prevalence and intensity in the plantation than in the tropical forest. Different seed dispersers provided contrasting initial mistletoe templates: the specialist frugivore Dicaeum concolor (plain flowerpecker) preferred to fly between mistletoes in infected trees in the plantation and likely intensified existing infections. In contrast, the dietary generalist Pycnonotus jocosus(red-whiskered bulbul) was more likely to visit uninfected trees, thereby establishing new infections. Thus, seed dispersal appears to be an important determinant of the mistletoes distribution, with deposition patterns providing an initial distribution template and determining small-scale patterns. However, post-dispersal and abiotic factors revealed that different host compatibilities and levels of light incidence in different habitats affected the survival of D. pentandra seedlings. | 11 | Timing the termination of the Doushantuo negative carbon isotope excursion: evidence from U-Pb ages from the Dengying and Liuchapo formations,South China显示文摘The Doushantuo negative carbon isotope excursion(DOUNCE) is the largest known marine inorganic carbon isotope anomaly. The origin of this pronounced negative excursion is still an enigmatic issue that attracts geologists. Time constraints on the excursion are the critical information that would provide insight into its genesis. In previous decades, the timing of its termination has been constrained by the widely cited zircon U-Pb age of 550.5 ± 0.8 Ma for the tuff at the top of the Miaohe Member at the Jiuqunao section in the Yangtze Gorges area, South China. However, results of recent studies indicate that the reliability of this time constraint needs to be re-evaluated. Here, a geochronological study was carried out using two K-bentonites from Fanglong in South China. A K-bentonite in the lower Dengying Formation yielded a U-Pb age of 557 ± 3 Ma, while a K-bentonite in the basal Liuchapo Formation yielded an age of 550 ± 3 Ma. Based on regional correlations between the Ediacaran successions in South China,the age(557 ± 3 Ma) for the K-bentonite in the lower Dengying Formation may serve as a second critical timing constraint for the ending of the DOUNCE. | 13 | Establishment and functional characterization of the reversibly immortalized mouse glomerular podocytes(imPODs)显示文摘Glomerular podocytes are highly specialized epithelial cells and play an essential role in establishing the selective permeability of the glomerular filtration barrier of kidney.Maintaining the viability and structural integrity of podocytes is critical to the clinical management of glomerular diseases,which requires a thorough understanding of podocyte cell biology.As mature podocytes lose proliferative capacity,a conditionally SV40 mutant tsA58-immortalized mouse podocyte line(designated as tsPC)was established from the Immortomouse over 20 years ago.However,the utility of the tsPC cells is hampered by the practical inconvenience of culturing these cells.In this study,we establish a user-friendly and reversibly-immortalized mouse podocyte line(designated as imPOD),on the basis of the tsPC cells by stably expressing the wildtype SV40 T-antigen,which is flanked with FRT sites.We show the imPOD cells exhibit long-term high proliferative activity,which can be effectively reversed by FLP recombinase.The imPOD cells express most podocyte-related markers,including WT-1,Nephrin,Tubulin and Vinculin,but not differentiation marker Synaptopodin.The imPOD cells do not form tumor-like masses in vivo.We further demonstrate that TGFb1 induces a podocyte injury-like response in the FLP-reverted imPOD cells by suppressing the expression of slit diaphragm-associated proteins P-Cadherin and ZO-1 and upregulating the expression of mesenchymal markers,a-SMA,Vimentin and Nestin,as well as fibrogenic factors CTGF and Col1a1.Collectively,our results strongly demonstrate that the newly engineered im-POD cells should be a valuable tool to study podocyte biology both under normal and under pathological conditions. | Xinyi Yu Liqun Chen Ke Wu Shujuan Yan Ruyi Zhang Chen Zhao Zongyue Zeng Yi Shu Shifeng Huang Jiayan Lei Xiaojuan Ji Chengfu Yuan Linghuan Zhang Yixiao Feng Wei Liu Bo Huang Bo Zhang Wenping Luo Xi Wang Bo Liu Rex C.Haydon Hue H.Luu Tong-Chuan He Hua Gan | 2018 | Genes & Diseases2018,5,2: | 5 |

| 15 | To image,or not to image:class-specific diffractive cameras with all-optical erasure of undesired objects显示文摘Privacy protection is a growing concern in the digital era,with machine vision techniques widely used throughout public and private settings.Existing methods address this growing problem by,e.g.,encrypting camera images or obscuring/blurring the imaged information through digital algorithms.Here,we demonstrate a camera design that performs class-specific imaging of target objects with instantaneous all-optical erasure of other classes of objects.This diffractive camera consists of transmissive surfaces structured using deep learning to perform selective imaging of target classes of objects positioned at its input field-of-view.After their fabrication,the thin diffractive layers collectively perform optical mode filtering to accurately form images of the objects that belong to a target data class or group of classes,while instantaneously erasing objects of the other data classes at the output field-of-view.Using the same framework,we also demonstrate the design of class-specific permutation and class-specific linear transformation cameras,where the objects of a target data class are pixel-wise permuted or linearly transformed following an arbitrarily selected transformation matrix for all-optical class-specific encryption,while the other classes of objects are irreversibly erased from the output image.The success of class-specific diffractive cameras was experimentally demonstrated using terahertz(THz)waves and 3D-printed diffractive layers that selectively imaged only one class of the MNIST handwritten digit dataset,all-optically erasing the other handwritten digits.This diffractive camera design can be scaled to different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum,including,e.g.,the visible and infrared wavelengths,to provide transformative opportunities for privacy-preserving digital cameras and task-specific data-efficient imaging. | Bijie Bai Yi Luo Tianyi Gan Jingtian Hu Yuhang Li Yifan Zhao Deniz Mengu Mona Jarrahi Aydogan Ozcan | 2022 | eLight2022,2,1: | 4 |
| 16 | Genetic diagnosis history and osteoarticular phenotype of a nontransfusion secondary hemochromatosis显示文摘BACKGROUND It is not easy to identify the cause of various iron overload diseases because the phenotypes overlap.Therefore,it is important to perform genetic testing to determine the genetic background of patients.AIM To investigate the genetic background of a patient with hemochromatosis complicated by psoriasis on both lower extremities.METHODS Ten years ago,a 61-year-old male presented with iron overload,jaundice,hemolytic anemia and microcytic hypochromic anemia.Computed tomography of the left knee joint showed enlargement of the tibial medullary cavity and thinned bone cortices.Magnetic resonance imaging showed hepatic hemochromatosis,extensive abnormal signals from bone marrow cavities and nodular lesions in the lateral medullary cavity of the upper left lateral tibia.Single photon emission computed tomography showed radial dots of abnormal concentration in the upper end of the left tibia and radial symmetry of abnormal concentrations in joints of the extremities.The patient showed several hot spot mutations of the HFE and G6PD genes detected by next-generation sequencing,but no responsible gene mutation was found.The thalassemia gene was detected by gap-PCR.RESULTS The patient was found to carry the-α4.2 and--SEA deletion mutations of the globin gene.These two mutations are common causes of Southeast Asianα-thalassemia,but rarely cause severe widespread non-transfusion secondary hemochromatosis osteoarthropathy.The simultaneous presence of an auxiliary superposition effect of a rare missense mutation of the PIEZO1 gene(NM_001142864,c.C4748T,p.A1583V)was considered.Moreover,several rare mutations of the IFIH1,KRT8,POFUT1,FLG,KRT2,and TGM5 genes may be involved in the pathogenesis of psoriasis.CONCLUSION The selection of genetic detection methods for hemochromatosis still needs to be based on an in-depth study of the clinical manifestations of the disease. | Dan-Dan Ruan Yu-Mian Gan Tao Lu Xiao Yang Yao-Bin Zhu Qing-Hua Yu Li-Sheng Liao Ning Lin Xin Qian Jie-Wei Luo Fa-Qiang Tang | 2020 | World Journal of Clinical Cases2020,8,23: | 4 |
| 17 | Model test on support scheme for carbonaceous slate tunnel in high geostress zone at high depth显示文摘The Muzhailing extra-long highway tunnel and corresponding inclined shafts in Lanzhou,Gansu Province,China passes through structurally complex carbonaceous slate that is under high ground stress.Rationally-designed and effective support is of high importance for achieving safe and efficient tunnel construction.The No.2 inclined shaft of Muzhailing Tunnel was taken as the engineering background prototype,for which,a similar model test was conducted to evaluate the effect of highly pretightened constant resistance(NPR,Negative Poisson’s Ratio)anchor cable support provision to the geologically complex carbonaceous slate at different depths.Two schemes were proposed during testing:one scheme was without support and the second was with asymmetric support from highly pre-tightened constant resistance anchor cable.Digital speckle displacement analysis system and micro-groundstress sensors were employed to measure the deformation and shear stress distribution of the tunnel.The results demonstrated that through the second support scheme,the deformation of the surrounding rock could be effectively ameliorated,while this support scheme was applied on the project site of the No.2 inclined shaft,to explore the rationality of the scheme through field engineering tests.On-site monitoring indicated that the deformation of the surrounding rock was within the reasonable design range and the problem of severe tunnel deformation was effectively controlled.The research methods and related conclusions can be used as a reference for the treatment of large deformation problems in deep-buried soft rock tunnels. | TAO Zhi-gang REN Shu-lin LI Gan XU Hao-tian LUO Sen-lin HE Man-chao | 2021 | Journal of Mountain Science2021,18,3: | 4 |

| 19 | Effects of Increased Night Temperature on Cellulose Synthesis and the Activity of Sucrose Metabolism Enzymes in Cotton Fiber显示文摘Temperature is one of the key factors that influence cotton fiber synthesis at the late growth stage of cotton. In this paper, using two early-maturing cotton varieties as experimental materials, night temperature increase was stimulated in the field using far-infrared quartz tubes set in semi-mobile incubators and compared with the normal night temperatures (control) in order to investigate the effects of night temperature on the cotton fiber cellulose synthesis during secondary wall thickening. The results showed that the activity of sucrose synthase (SuSy) and sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) quickly increased and remained constant during the development of cotton fiber, while the activity of acid invertase (AI) and alkaline invertase (NI) decreased, increased night temperatures prompted the rapid transformation of sugar, and all the available sucrose fully converted into cellulose. With night temperature increasing treatment, an increase in SuSy activity and concentration of sucrose indicate more sucrose converted into UDPG (uridin diphosphate-glucose) during the early and late stages of cotton fiber development. Furthermore, SPS activity and the increased concentration of fructose accelerated fructose degradation and reduced the inhibition of fructose to SuSy; maintaining higher value of allocation proportion of invertase and sucrose during the early development stages of cotton fiber, which was propitious to supply a greater carbon source and energy for cellulose synthesis. Therefore, the minimum temperature in the nightime was a major factor correlated with the activity of sucrose metabolism enzymes in cotton fiber. In its first phase, JUNA aims at the direct measurements of^(25)Mg(p,γ)^(26)Al,^(19)F(p,α)^(16)O,^(13)C(α,n)^(16)O and ^(12)C(α,γ)^(16)O reactions. The experimental setup,which includes an accelerator system with high stability and high intensity, a detector system, and a shielding material with low background, will be established during the above research.
