| 1 | Protective effect of essential oil of Pistacia atlantica Desf. on peptic ulcer: role of α-pinene显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of Pistacia atlantica Desf. oleoresin essential oil on peptic ulcer(PU) and its antibacterial effect on metronidazole-resistant Helicobacter pylori, as well as chemi-cal composition of the essential oil.METHODS: The essential oil was standardized using gas chromatography mass spectrometry(GC/MS) analysis. Acute toxicity of the essential oil was assessed in animal model. In vitro anti-Helicobacter pylori activity was performed through disc diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration method. For gastroprotective assay, rats received Pistacia atlantica Desf. essential oil(25, 50 and 100 mg/kg orally) 1 h before induction of ulcer by ethanol.Macroscopic(ulcer index and protection rate) and microscopic examination were performed.RESULTS: The GC/MS analysis of the essential oil led to the identification of twenty constituents andα-pinene is predominant constituent. The essential oil was safe up to 2000 mg/kg. All Helicobacter pylori strains were susceptible to the essential oil and the MIC ranged from 275 to 1100 μg/m L. The ulcer index for treated groups was significantly reduced compared to control(P < 0.001) with EC50 value of 12.32 mg/kg. | 3 | Reciprocal impact of host factors and Helicobacter pylori genotypes on gastric diseases显示文摘AIM: To assess the impact of Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) genotypes and patient age and sex on the development of gastric diseases.METHODS: H. pylori-infected patients(n = 233) referred to the endoscopy unit at Tehran University of Medical Sciences(Tehran,Iran) were diagnosed with chronic gastritis(CG),gastric ulcer(GU),or duodenal ulcer(DU). Brucella blood agar was used for biopsy cultures and H. pylori isolation under microaerobic conditions. H. pylori isolates were confirmed with biochemical tests and through amplification of the 16 S r RNA gene. DNA was extracted from fresh cultures of the H. pylori isolates and used for amplification of vac A alleles and the cag A gene. Statistical analysis was performed to determine the association between H. pylori genotypes,age(< 40 years vs > 40 years) and sex of the patient,and gastric diseases.RESULTS: CG was the most prevalent gastric disease(113/233; 48.5%),compared to GU(64/233; 27.5%)and DU(56/233; 24%). More patients were male,and gastric diseases were more frequent in patients > 40 years(P < 0.05). The percentage of CG and GU patients that were male and female did not show a significant difference; however DU was more common in males(P < 0.05). Interestingly,a diagnosis of CG in patients > 40 years was more common in females(18.5%) than males(11.6%)(P = 0.05),whereas a diagnosis of GU or DU in patients > 40 years was more frequent in males(14.6% vs 10.7% and 12.4% vs 4.3%,respectively). Overall,genotyping of the H. pylori isolates revealed that the vac A s1(82%),vac A m2(70%),and cag A+(72.5%) alleles were more frequent than vac A s2(18%),vac A m1(29.2%),and cag A-(all P < 0.05). The vac A s1m2 cag A+ genotype was the most prevalent within the three disease groups. vac A s1m2 frequency was 56.2% with a similar occurrence in all diagnoses,while vac A s1m1 appeared more often in DU patients(33.9%). A genotype of vac A s2m2 occurred in 15% of isolates and was more common in CG patients(21.2%); vac A s2m1 was the least common genotype(3%). The vac A s1 allele was found to be a risk factor for DU,vac A s2 for CG,and vac A s1 and vac A s2 for GU(all P < 0.05). The vac A s2m2 genotype was associated with the development of CG and GU compared to DU(P < 0.05). | 5 | Visual performance of four types of diffractive multifocal intraocular lenses and a review of articles显示文摘AIM: To compare the clinical outcomes of a variety of multifocal intraocular lenses(MIOLs) in patients diagnosed with presbyopia or cataracts. METHODS: This clinical trial study included 141 patients(282 eyes) with different MIOLs implantation. The Symfony(60 eyes), the Re STOR(100 eyes), the AT LISAtri(60 eyes), and the Pan Optix(62 eyes) intraocular lenses were evaluated in this prospective interventional study. The near, intermediate, and distant visual acuities, contrast sensitivity, and defocus curve were measured as valid criteria. To statistically analyze the results, we used the Statistical Package for Social Science software, the non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank t, the one-way analysis of variance and the Tukey’s post-hoc test in our analysis. Moreover, we conducted a detailed literature search on the Pub Med database in English about MIOLs, in total 59 studies were included in this review article.RESULTS: The four approaches did not show any significant difference in the best-corrected distance visual acuity(P>0.05). The defocus curves at the contrast of 100% showed that trifocal IOLs had better intermediate performance than the bifocal IOL(P<0.05). There were no statistically significant differences between AT LISAtri and Pan Optix lenses for visual acuity at all distances. The eyes with Pan Optix, Symfony, and AT LISAtri IOL showed better contrast sensitivity than those Re STOR at spatial frequencies of 1, 3, and 6 cpd in photopic and mesopic conditions(P<0.001). CONCLUSION: All four groups of the multifocal lenses were satisfying in terms of distance and near vision. | 6 | The innate immune response to allotransplants: mechanisms and therapeutic potentials显示文摘Surgical trauma and ischemia reperfusion injury(IRI)are unavoidable aspects of any solid organ transplant procedure.They trigger a multifactorial antigen-independent inflammatory process that profoundly affects both the early and long-term outcomes of the transplanted organ.The injury associated with donor organ procurement,storage,and engraftment triggers innate immune activation that inevitably results in cell death,which may occur in many different forms.Dying cells in donor grafts release damage-associated molecular patterns(DAMPs),which alert recipient innate cells,including macrophages and dendritic cells(DCs),through the activation of the complement cascade and toll-like receptors(TLRs).The long-term effect of inflammation on innate immune cells is associated with changes in cellular metabolism that skew the cells towards aerobic glycolysis,resulting in innate immune cell activation and inflammatory cytokine production.The different roles of proinflammatory cytokines in innate immune activation have been described,and these cytokines also stimulate optimal T-cell expansion during allograft rejection.Therefore,early innate immune events after organ transplantation determine the fate of the adaptive immune response.In this review,we summarize the contributions of innate immunity to allograft rejection and discuss recent studies and emerging concepts in the targeted delivery of therapeutics to modulate the innate immune system to enhance allograft survival. | Jordi Ochando Farideh Ordikhani Peter Boros Stefan Jordan | 2019 | Cellular & Molecular Immunology2019,16,4: | 5 |

| 8 | Ag/TiO_2/freeze-dried graphene nanocomposite as a high performance photocatalyst under visible light irradiation显示文摘Ag/TiO_2/freeze-dried graphene nanocomposites have been prepared via a facile one-step solvothermal method for the photocatalytic degradation of Rh B under visible light irradiation. During the solvothermal process, reduction of graphene oxide and loading of Ag/TiO_2 nanoparticles on graphene sheets were achieved. Investigation of chemical state of products showed that covering of Ag/TiO_2 surface with higher weight ratio of graphene resulting in that Ag metals in Ag/TiO_2 were oxidized to Ag2 O in nanocomposite structure after solvothermal process. Degree of photocatalytic activity enhancement strongly depends on the coverage of Ag/TiO_2 surface by porous graphene. The sample of 1 wt% porous graphene hybridized Ag/TiO_2 showed the highest photocatalytic activity, which is related to high migration efficiency of photoinduced of electrons and reduction of electron–hole recombination rate due to high electrical conductivity of graphene. Expanding of absorption to visible light region was ascribed to surface plasmon resonance effect of Ag metals and presence of graphene. | 10 | Template-based growth of titanium dioxide nanorods by a particulate sol-electrophoretic deposition process显示文摘TiO 2 nanorods have been successfully grown into a track-etched polycarbonate (PC) membrane by a particulate sol-electrophoretic deposition from an aqueous medium.The prepared sols had a narrow particle size distribution around 17 nm and excellent stability against aging,with zeta potentials in the range of 47-50 mV at pH 2.It was found that TiO 2 nanorods were grown from dilute aqueous sol with a low,0.1-M concentration.Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis confirmed that a full conversion of titanium isopropoxide was obtained by hydrolysis,resulting in the formation of TiO 2 particles.X-ray diffraction (XRD) results revealed that TiO 2 nanorods dried at 100 C were a mixture of anatase and brookite phases,whereas they were a mixture of anatase and rutile structures at 500 C.Moreover,the rutile content of the TiO 2 nanorods was higher than that of TiO 2 powders.Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images confirmed that TiO 2 nanorods had a smooth morphology and longitudinal uniformity in diameter.Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) images showed that TiO 2 nanorods grown by sol-electrophoresis from the dilute aqueous sol had a dense structure with a uniform diameter of 200 nm,containing small particles with an average size of 15 nm.Simultaneous differential thermal (SDT) analysis verified that individual TiO 2 nanorods,grown into a PC template,were obtained after annealing at 500 C.Based on kinetic studies,it was found that uniform TiO 2 nanorods with high-quality morphology were obtained under optimum conditions at an applied potential of 0.3 V/cm and a deposition time of 60min. | Mohammad Reza Mohammadi Farideh Ordikhani Derek J.Fray Farzad Khomamizadeh | 2011 | Particuology2011,9,2: | 4 |

| 12 | Vacuoles of Candida yeast as a specialized niche for Helicobacter pylori显示文摘Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori)are resistant to hostile gastric environments and antibiotic therapy,reflecting the possibility that they are protected by an ecological niche,such as inside the vacuoles of human epithelial and immune cells.Candida yeast may also provide such an alternative niche,as fluorescently labeled H.pylori were observed as fast-moving and viable bacterium-like bodies inside the vacuoles of gastric,oral,vaginal and foodborne Candida yeasts.In addition,H.pylori-specific genes and proteins were detected in samples extracted from these yeasts.The H.pylori present within these yeasts produce peroxiredoxin and thiol peroxidase,providing the ability to detoxify oxygen metabolites formed in immune cells.Furthermore,these bacteria produce urease and VacA,two virulence determinants of H.pylori that influence phago-lysosome fusion and bacterial survival in macrophages.Microscopic observations of H.pylori cells in new generations of yeasts along with amplification of H.pylori-specific genes from consecutive generations indicate that new yeasts can inherit the intracellular H.pylori as part of their vacuolar content.Accordingly,it is proposed that yeast vacuoles serve as a sophisticated niche that protects H.pylori against the environmental stresses and provides essential nutrients,including ergosterol,for its growth and multiplication.This intracellular establishment inside the yeast vacuole likely occurred long ago,leading to the adaptation of H.pylori to persist in phagocytic cells.The presence of these bacteria within yeasts,including foodborne yeasts,along with the vertical transmission of yeasts from mother to neonate,provide explanations for the persistence and propagation of H.pylori in the human population.This Topic Highlight reviews and discusses recent evidence regarding the evolutionary adaptation of H.pylori to thrive in host cell vacuoles. | Farideh Siavoshi Parastoo Saniee | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,18: | 3 |

| 15 | Effect of capsular tension ring implantation on predicted refractive error after cataract surgery in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome显示文摘AIM: To investigate the effect of capsular tension ring(CTR) implantation on predicted refractive error after cataract surgery in patients with pseudoexfoliation(PEX) syndrome.METHODS: This double-blind randomized clinical trial was conducted on 60 patients with PEX syndrome referring to Imam Khomeini Hospital affiliated to Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences, Ahvaz, Iran, for undergoing cataract surgery. The study population was divided into two groups, namely CTR group(n=30) and non-CTR group(control group;n=30). The refractive error and anterior chamber depth(ACD) were measured 1 wk, 1 mo, and 3 mo after phacoemulsification(PE) surgery.RESULTS: The results indicated no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of predicted refractive error(obtained by subtracting preoperative predicted refractive error from actual postoperative refractive error) 1 wk(P=0.47), 1 mo(P=0.30), and 3 mo(P=0.06) after the PE surgery. Regarding the CTR group, the changes of ACD was statistically significant 1 and 3 mo after the PE surgery, compared to those obtained 1 wk post-surgery(P=0.005).CONCLUSION: The CTR implantation in PEX cataractous patients without zonulysis has no statistically significant effect on the predicted refraction and ACD changes after PE. The predicted refraction error has a hyperopic shift in both groups.
