| 1 | A randomized open-label trial of on-demand rabeprazole vs ranitidine for patients with non-erosive reflux disease显示文摘AIM:To compare the efficacy of the proton-pump inhibitor, rabeprazole, with that of the H 2-receptor antagonist, ranitidine,as on-demand therapy for relieving symptoms associated with non-erosive reflux disease(NERD).METHODS:This is a single center,prospective,randomized,open-label trial of on-demand therapy with rabeprazole(group A) vs ranitidine(group B) for 4 wk.Eighty-three patients who presented to the American University of Beirut Medical Center with persistent gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) symptoms and a normal upper gastrointestinal endoscopy were eligible for the study.Patients in group A(n = 44) were allowed a maximum rabeprazole dose of 20 mg twice daily, while those in group B(n = 39) were allowed a maximum ranitidine dose of 300 mg twice daily.Efficacy was assessed by patient evaluation of global symptom relief, scores of the SF-36 quality of life(QoL) questionnaires, total number of pills used, and number of medication-free days.RESULTS:Among the 83 patients who were enrolled in the study,76 patients(40 in the rabeprazole group and 36 in the ranitidine group) completed the 4-wk trial.Baseline characteristics were comparable between both groups. After 4 wk,there was no significant difference in the subjective global symptom relief between the rabeprazole and the ranitidine groups(71.4% vs 65.4%,respectively;P = 0.9).There were no statistically significant differences between mean cumulative scores of the SF-36 QoL questionnaire for the two study groups(rabeprazole 22.40 ± 27.53 vs ranitidine 17.28 ± 37.06;P = 0.582).There was no significant difference in the mean number of pills used(rabeprazole 35.70 ± 29.75 vs ranitidine 32.86 ± 26.98;P = 0.66).There was also no statistically significant difference in the mean number of medication-free days between both groups.CONCLUSION:Rabeprazole has a comparable efficacy compared to ranitidine when given on-demand for the treatment of NERD.Both medications were associated with improved quality of life. | Abdallah A Kobeissy Jana G Hashash Faek R Jamali Assaad M Skoury Reham Haddad Sarah El-Samad Rami Ladki Rola Aswad Assaad M Soweid | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,19: | 4 |
| 2 | Eosinophilic colitis显示文摘Eosinophilic colitis (EC) is a rare form of primary eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease with a bimodal peak of prevalence in neonates and young adults. EC remains a little understood condition in contrast to the increasingly recognized eosinophilic esophagitis. Clinical presentation of EC is highly variable according to mucosal, transmural, or serosal predominance of inflammation. EC has a broad differential diagnosis because colon tissue eosinophilia often occurs in parasitic infection, drug-induced allergic reactions, inflammatory bowel disease, and various connective tissue disorders, which require thorough searching for secondary causes that may be specifically treated with antibiotics or dietary and drug elimination. Like eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease involving other segments of the gastrointestinal tract, EC responds very well to steroids that may be spared by using antihistamines, leukotriene inhibitors and biologics. | Nnenna Okpara Bassam Aswad Gyorgy Baffy | 2009 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,24: | 2 |
| 3 | Fusarium wilt of banana:Current update and sustainable disease control using classical and essential oils approaches显示文摘Fusarium species were reported to produce biofilms.Biofilms are superficial societies of microbes bounded and endangered by being situated or taking place outside a cell or cells. The most destructive fungal diseases caused by phytopathogens are as a result of biofilms formation.Fusarium wilt of banana(Panama disease)is caused by a soil-borne pathogen called Fusarium oxysporum f.sp.cubense.Fusarium oxysporum occurs in a form of a species complex(FOSC)which encompasses a crowd of strains.Horizontal genetic factor transfer may donate to the observed assortment in pathogenic strains, while sexual reproduction is unknown in the FOSC.Fusarium wilt is a notorious disease on several crops worldwide.Yield loss caused by this pathogen is huge, and significant to destroy crop yields annually, thereby affecting the producer countries in various continents of the world. The disease is also resistant to various synthetic chemical fungicides. However, excessive use of synthetic fungicides during disease control could be lethal to humans, animals, and plants. This calls for alternative eco-friendly management of this disease by targeting the biofilms formation and finally suppressing this devastating phytopathogen. In this review,we,therefore, described the damage caused by Fusarium wilt disease, the concept of filamentous fungal biofilms, classical control strategies, sustainable disease control strategies using essential oils, and prevention and control of vegetables Fusarium wilt diseases. | Abubakar Abubakar Ismaila Khairulmazmi Ahmad Yasmeen Siddique Muhammad Aswad Abdul Wahab Abdulaziz Bashir Kutawa Adamu Abdullahi Syazwan Afif Mohd Zobir Arifin Abdu Siti Nor Akmar Abdullah | 2023 | Horticultural Plant Journal2023,9,1: | 2 |
