| 1 | Effects of alkaline-electrolyzed and hydrogen-rich water,in a high-fat-diet nonalcoholic fatty liver disease mouse model显示文摘AIM To identify the effect of hydrogen-rich water(HRW) and electrolyzed-alkaline water(EAW) on high-fat-induced non-alcoholic fatty acid disease in mice.METHODS Mice were divided into four groups:(1) Regular diet(RD)/regular water(RW);(2) high-fat diet(HFD)/RW;(3) RD/EAW; and(4) HFD/EAW. Weight and body composition were measured. After twelve weeks, animals were sacrificed, and livers were processed for histology and reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. A similar experiment was performed using HRW to determine the influence and importance of molecular hydrogen(H2) in EAW. Finally, we compared the response of hepatocytes isolated from mice drinking HRW or RW to palmitate overload.RESULTS EAW had several properties important to the study:(1) pH = 11;(2) oxidation-reduction potential of-495 mV; and(3) H2 = 0.2 mg/L. However, in contrast to other studies, there were no differences between the groups drinking EAW or RW in either the RD or HFD groups. We hypothesized that the null result was due to low H2 concentrations. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of RW and low and high HRW concentrations(L-HRW = 0.3 mg H2/L and H-HRW = 0.8 mg H2/L, respectively) in mice fed an HFD. Compared to RW and L-HRW, H-HRW resulted in a lower increase in fat mass(46% vs 61%), an increase in lean body mass(42% vs 28%), and a decrease in hepatic lipid accumulation(P < 0.01). Lastly, exposure of hepatocytes isolated from mice drinking H-HRW to palmitate overload demonstrated a protective effect from H2 by reducing hepatocyte lipid accumulation in comparison to mice drinking regular water.CONCLUSION H2 is the therapeutic agent in electrolyzed-alkaline water and attenuates HFD-induced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in mice. | Karen Jackson Noa Dressler Rotem S Ben-Shushan Ari Meerson Tyler W LeBaron Snait Tamir | 2018 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2018,24,45: | 9 |
| 2 | Modular architecture for fully non-blocking silicon photonic switch fabric显示文摘Integrated photonics offers the possibility of compact,low energy,bandwidth-dense interconnects for large port count spatial optical switches,facilitating flexible and energy efficient data movement in future data communications systems.To achieve widespread adoption,intimate integration with electronics has to be possible,requiring switch design using standard microelectronic foundry processes and available devices.We report on the feasibility of a switch fabric comprised of ubiquitous silicon photonic building blocks,opening the possibility to combine technologies,and materials towards a new path for switch fabric design.Rather than focus on integrating all devices on a single silicon chip die to achieve large port count optical switching,this work shifts the focus towards innovative packaging and integration schemes.In this work,we demonstrate 1×8 and 8×1 microring-based silicon photonic switch building blocks with software control,providing the feasibility of a full 8×8 architecture composed of silicon photonic building blocks.The proposed switch is fully non-blocking,has path-independent insertion loss,low crosstalk,and is straightforward to control.We further analyze this architecture and compare it with other common switching architectures for varying underlying technologies and radices,showing that the proposed architecture favorably scales to very large port counts when considering both crosstalk and architectural footprint.Separating a switch fabric into functional building blocks via multiple photonic integrated circuits offers the advantage of piece-wise manufacturing,packaging,and assembly,potentially reducing the number of optical I/O and electrical contacts on a single die. | Dessislava Nikolova David M.Calhoun Yang Liu Sébastien Rumley Ari Novack Tom Baehr-Jones Michael Hochberg Keren Bergman | 2017 | Microsystems & Nanoengineering2017,3,1: | 3 |
| 3 | Hernia mesh prevent dislocation after wide excision and reconstruction of giant cell tumor distal radius显示文摘Giant cell tumor(GCT) remains as major health problem. GCT which located at the lower end of the radius tends to be more aggressive. Wide excision and reconstruction of the wrist in stage 3 of distal radius GCT lesion is an optimal modality to prevent tumor recurrence. However, dislocation often occurs as its complication. We are reporting patient with GCT of distal radius treated with wide excision and reconstruction using nonvascularized fibular graft and the addition of hernia mesh. Circumferential non-absorbable polypropylene hernia mesh was applied, covered radioulnar joint and volar aspect of radius, and served as additional support to prevent dislocation. During five years and two months of follow-up, we found no dislocation in our patient. Furthermore, good functional outcome was obtained. | 4 | Is there a role of lipid-lowering therapies in the management of fatty liver disease?显示文摘Atherogenic dyslipidemia is characterized by increased triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations.It is highly prevalent in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)and contributes to the increased cardiovascular risk associated with this condition.Alongside insulin resistance it plays an important pathogenetic role in NAFLD/non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH)development and progression.It has been shown that cholesterol-lowering reduces cardiovascular risk more in NAFLD vs non-NAFLD high-risk individuals.This evidence highlights the importance of effective lipid modulation in NAFLD.In this narrative review the effects of the most commonly used lipid-lowering therapies on liver outcomes alongside their therapeutic implications in NAFLD/NASH are critically discussed.Preclinical and clinical evidence suggests that statins reduce hepatic steatosis,inflammation and fibrosis in patients with NAFLD/NASH.Most data are derived from observational and small prospective clinical studies using changes in liver enzyme activities,steatosis/fibrosis scores,and imaging evidence of steatosis as surrogates.Also,relevant histologic benefits were noted in small biopsy studies.Atorvastatin and rosuvastatin showed greater benefits,whereas data for other statins are scarce and sometimes conflicting.Similar studies to those of statins showed efficacy of ezetimibe against hepatic steatosis.However,no significant anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic actions of ezetimibe have been shown.Preclinical studies showed that fibrates through peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor(PPAR)αactivation may have a role in NAFLD prevention and management.Nevertheless,no relevant benefits have been noted in human studies.Species-related differences in PPARαexpression and its activation responsiveness may help explain this discrepancy.Omega-3 fatty acids reduced hepatic steatosis in numerous heterogeneous studies,but their benefits on hepatic inflammation and fibrosis have not been established.Promising preliminary data for the highly purified eicosapentaenoic acid require further confirmation.Observational studies suggest that proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin9 inhibitors may also have a role in the management of NAFLD,though this needs to be established by future prospective studies. | Ismini Tzanaki Aris P Agouridis Michael S Kostapanos | 2022 | World Journal of Hepatology2022,14,1: | 2 |
