1Transplantation of stem cell-derived astrocytes for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and spinal cord injury显示文摘Neglected for years, astrocytes are now recognized to fulfill and support many, if not all, homeostatic functionsof the healthy central nervous system(CNS). During neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS) and spinal cord injury(SCI), astrocytes in the vicinity of degenerating areas undergo both morphological and functional changes that might compromise their intrinsic properties. Evidence from human and animal studies show that deficient astrocyte functions or loss-of-astrocytes largely contribute to increased susceptibility to cell death for neurons, oligodendrocytes and axons during ALS and SCI disease progression. Despite exciting advances in experimental CNS repair, most of current approaches that are translated into clinical trials focus on the replacement or support of spinal neurons through stem cell transplantation, while none focus on the specific replacement of astroglial populations. Knowing the important functions carried out by astrocytes in the CNS, astrocyte replacement-based therapies might be a promising approach to alleviate overall astrocyte dysfunction, deliver neurotrophic support to degenerating spinal tissue and stimulate endogenous CNS repair abilities. Enclosed in this review, we gathered experimental evidence that argue in favor of astrocyte transplantation during ALS and SCI. Based on their intrinsic properties and according to the cell type transplanted, astrocyte precursors or stem cell-derived astrocytes promote axonal growth, support mechanisms and cells involved in myelination, are able to modulate the host immune response, deliver neurotrophic factors and provide protective molecules against oxidative or excitotoxic insults, amongst many possible benefits. Embryonic or adult stem cells can even be genetically engineered in order to deliver missing gene products and therefore maximize the chance of neuroprotection and functional recovery. However, before broad clinical translation, further preclinical data on safety, reliability and therapeutic efficiency should be collected. 3A Chance-Constrained Wind Range Quantification Approach to Robust SCUC by Determining Dynamic Uncertainty Intervals显示文摘With increasing penetration of wind energy,the variability and uncertainty of wind resources have become important factors for power systems operation.In particular,an effective method is required for identifying the stochastic range of wind power output,in order to better guide the operational security of power systems.This paper proposes a metric to determine accurate wind power output ranges so that the probability of actual wind power outputs being out of the range would be less than a small pre-defined value.A mixed-integer linear programming(MILP)based chance-constrained optimization model is proposed for efficiently determining optimal wind power output ranges,which are quantified via maximum and the minimum wind generation levels with respect to a certain time interval.The derived wind power range is then used to construct dynamic uncertainty intervals for the robust securityconstrained unit commitment(SCUC)model.A comparison with the deterministic SCUC model and the traditional robust SCUC model with presumed static uncertainty interval demonstrates that the proposed approach can offer more accurate wind power variabilities(i.e.,different variability degrees with respect to different wind power output levels at different time periods).The proposed approach is also shown to offer more effective and robust SCUC solutions,guaranteeing operational security and economics of power systems.Numerical case studies on a 6-bus system and the modified IEEE 118-bus system with realworld wind power data illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.Aditi Upadhyay Bingqian Hu Jie Li Lei Wu 2016CSEE Journal of Power and Energy Systems2016,2,1:6
4Salt Tolerance Mechanisms and Approaches:Future Scope of Halotolerant Genes and Rice Landraces显示文摘All rice plant developmental stages are severely affected by soil salinity. Salinity-induced ionic and osmotic stresses affect stomata closure and gaseous exchange, and reduce transpiration and the rate of carbon assimilation, and hence decrease plant yield. Understanding the response of rice plants toward salinity stress at the genetic level and developing salt-tolerant varieties are the vital mandates for its effective management. This review described the present status of salt-tolerance achieved in rice by various mechanisms including the ion homeostasis(Na^+/H^+, OsNHX antiporters), compatible organic solutes(glycine betaine and proline), antioxidative genes(OsECS, OsVTE1, OsAPX and OsMSRA4.1), salt responsive regulatory elements(transcription factors, cis-acting elements and miRNAs) and genes ecoding protein kinases(MAPKs, SAPKs and STRKs). Further, the future perspective of developing salt-tolerant varieties lies in exploring halotolerant gene homologs from rice varieties, especially the landraces. Genetic diversity among rice landraces can serve as a valuable resource for future studies toward variety improvement through breeding and genome editing. 5Low-cost high entropy alloy(HEA)for high-efficiency oxygen evolution reaction(OER)显示文摘Oxygen evolution reaction(OER)is the key step involved both in water splitting devices and rechargeable metal-air batteries,and hence,there is an urgent need for a stable and low-cost material for efficient OER.In the present investigation,Co-Fe-Ga-NiZn(CFGNZ)high entropy alloy(HEA)has been utilized as a low-cost electrocatalyst for OER.Herein,after cyclic voltammetry activation,CFGNZ-nanoparticles(NPs)are covered with oxidized surface and form high entropy(oxy)hydroxides(HEOs),exhibiting a low overpotential of 370 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA/cm^(2)with a small Tafel slope of 71 mV/dec.CFGNZ alloy has higher electrochemical stability in comparison to state-of-the art RuO2 electrocatalyst as no degradation has been observed up to 10 h of chronoamperometry.Transmission electron microscopy(TEM)studies after 10 h of long-term chronoamperometry test showed no change in the crystal structure,which confirmed the high stability of CFGNZ.The density functional theory(DFT)based calculations show that the closeness of d(p)-band centers to the Fermi level(EF)plays a major role in determining active sites.This work highlights the tremendous potential of CFGNZ HEA for OER,which is the primary reaction involved in water splitting.Lalita Sharma Nirmal Kumar Katiyar Arko Parui Rakesh Das Ritesh Kumar Chandra Sekhar Tiwary Abhisek K.Singh Aditi Halder Krishanu Biswas 2022Nano Research2022,15,6:5

7Advances in orthodontic clear aligner materials显示文摘Rapid technological improvements in biomaterials,computer-aided design(CAD)and manufacturing(CAM)have endorsed clear aligner therapy(CAT)as a mainstay of orthodontic treatment,and the materials employed for aligner fabrication play an all-important role in determining the clinical performance of clear aligners.This narrative review has attempted to comprehensively encompass the entire gamut of materials currently used for the fabrication of clear aligners and elucidate their characteristics that are crucial in determining their performance in an oral environment.Historical developments and current protocols in aligner fabrication,features of contemporary bioactive materials,and emerging trends related to CAT are discussed.Advances in aligner material chemistry and engineering possess the potential to bring about radical transformations in the therapeutic applications of CAT;in the absence of which,clear aligners would continue to underperform clinically,due to their inherent biomechanical constraints.Finally,while innovations in aligner materials such as shape memory polymers,direct three-dimensional(3D)printed clear aligners and bioactive materials combined with clear aligner materials are essential to further advance the applications of CAT;increased awareness of environmental responsibilities among aligner manufacturers,aligner prescribing clinicians and aligner users is essential for better alignment of our climate change goals towards a sustainable planet.Yashodhan M.Bichu Abdulraheem Alwafi Xiaomo Liu James Andrews Bjorn Ludwig Aditi Y.Bichu Bingshuang Zou 2023Bioactive Materials2023,,4:4

10Alzheimer's disease: the silver tsunami of the 21^(st) century显示文摘Alzheimer's disease(AD), a fatal progressive neurodegenerative disorder, has no cure to date. One of the causes of AD is the accumulation of amyloid-beta 42(Aβ42) plaques, which result in the onset of neurodegeneration. It is not known how these plaques trigger the onset of neurodegeneration. There are several animal models developed to(i) study etiology of disease,(ii) look for genetic modifiers, and(iii) identify chemical inhibitors that can block neurodegeneration and help to find cure for this disease. An insect model of Drosophila melanogaster has also provided new insights into the disease. 11Artificial Seed Production of Tylophora indica for Interim Storing and Swapping of Germplasm显示文摘Our research work demonstrates the single bead alginate-encapsulation, interim storing and conversion of Tylophora indica(Burm. Fil.) Merrill.Most effective encapsulation of in vitro nodal segments [(4 ± 1) mm long], ensuing in sphere-shaped artificial seeds of similar morphology, was achieved through 75 mmol·L^(-1)calcium chloride(CaCl_2 · 2H_2O) plus 3%(w/v) Na-alginate with 93.3% conversion frequency. The earliest conversion(within 7 days of incubation) of artificial seeds occurred in half-strength liquid Murashige and Skoog medium. Among the three different temperature regimes [(5 ± 1) °C,(15 ± 1) °C, and(25 ± 1) °C], storage of artificial seeds at(15 ± 1) °C executed the highest frequency of conversion(90%) after 15 days of storage. Lengthier storage significantly reduced the conversion frequency of artificial seeds irrespective of storage temperature. Nevertheless, the conversion frequency after 30 days of storage at(15 ± 1) °C was recorded at 70% without further decline even following45 days of storage, which evidently suggests that lower temperature(15 ± 1) °C is apt for storage and subsequent conversion of T. indica artificial seeds. 16Experience with hemoadsorption (CytoSorb~?) in the management of septic shock patients显示文摘BACKGROUND Cytokines and inflammatory mediators are the hallmarks of sepsis.Extracorporeal cytokine hemoadsorption devices are the newer clinical support system to overcome the cytokine storm during sepsis.AIM To retrospectively evaluate the clinical outcomes of patients admitted in intensive care unit with septic shock with different etiologies.METHODS The laboratory parameters including biomarkers such as procalcitonin,serum lactate and C-reactive protein;and the hemodynamic parameters;mean arterial pressure,vasopressor doses,sepsis scores,cytokine levels and other vital parameters were evaluated.We evaluated these outcomes among survivors and non-survivors.RESULTS Of 100 patients evaluated,40 patients survived.Post treatment,the vasopressors dosage remarkably decreased though it was not statistically different;34.15%(P=0.0816)for epinephrine,20.5%for norepinephrine(P=0.3099)and 51%(P=0.0678)for vasopressin.In the survivor group,a remarkable reduction of biomarkers levels;procalcitonin(65%,P=0.5859),C-reactive protein(27%,P=0.659),serum lactate(27%,P=0.0159)and bilirubin(43.11%;P=0.0565)were observed from baseline after CytoSorb^® therapy.A significant reduction in inflammatory markers;interleukin 6 and interleukin 10;(87%and 92%,P<0.0001)and in tumour necrosis factor(24%,P=0.0003)was also seen.Overall,28(28%)patients who were given CytoSorb^® therapy less than 48 h after onset of septic shock survived and the maximum duration of stay for 70%of these patients in intensive care unit was less than 15 d.CONCLUSION CytoSorb^® is a safe and well tolerated rescue therapy option in patients with septic shock.However,early(preferably within<48 h after onset of septic shock)initiation could result in better clinical outcomes.Further randomized trials are needed to define the potential benefits of this new treatment modality.Yatin Mehta Chitra Mehta Ashish Kumar Joby Varghese George Aditi Gupta Saurabh Nanda Gourav Kochhar Arun Raizada 2020World Journal of Critical Care Medicine2020,9,1:2
